Surveyed and plotted in March of 1872, the town was named in honor of Daniel Waterman, General Solicitor of the Chicago and Iowa Railroad which reached Waterman in December of 1870.

The village is known for the Waterman and Western train line that operates in Lion's Club Park. This 1/3 scale train line comprises a 1/2 mile train line circling the park and is a hobby of local residents Peter & Charleen Robinson.
